Let’s face it: in the t-shirt industry, online shops are always copying each other. I know you had to have seen a t-shirt in one online store, only to find a t-shirt with the same idea and same phrase in another store. And no, I’m not talking about licensed t-shirts (Superman t-shirt, Bugs Bunny t-shirt, Spider Man t-shirt). I’m talking about those t-shirts based on a popular phrase, that no one really owns the rights to, so everybody copies it. For T-Mag #63, we decided to highlight the ‘More Cowbell’ t-shirt.
For those of you that didn’t know, ‘more cowbell’ is a pop culture catch phrase that comes from a Saturday Night Live sketch, back in 2000. The SNL sketch was about the recording of the Blue Oyster Cult Song, (Don’t Fear) the Reaper. Christopher Walken, who was ‘The Bruce Dickinson’ in the sketch, first delivered the line, while Will Ferrel acted as Gene Frenkele, a fictional cowbell player, who annoyed his band. I never saw the skit (until, like, yesterday), but I always got a bit annoyed when I saw this shirt in like EVERY online funny t-shirt shop. Both the ‘big boys’ and the ‘tiny tots’ (small print on-demand shops) have a shirt with this phrase and the cowbell image.
There are so many of them out there, but check out these ‘More Cowbell‘ t-shirts that all look similar. While you’re at it, also check out the SNL More Cowbell sketch.
