We interview t-shirt designer Chow Hon Lam a.k.a ‘Flying Mouse’.

TM: To start off, how did you come up with the nickname Flying Mouse?

FM: I was thinking of creating one happy nickname, and a nickname which people easily remember. Flying Mouse actually is a character of one of my favorite childhood cartoons. He is a happy guy and he is strong. I hope I can be like him when I grow up, lol.

TM: How long have you been designing t-shirts?

FM: About 2 years.

TM: How has the whole Threadless experience been? How did it feel winning for the first time on Threadless?

FM: Threadless made me know what is tee shirt design, I submitted my very first tee shirt design there. Threadless gave me a lot. I won some cash prizes there. I won some friendships there. The artists, community, and the staff there are really friendly. And Threadless helped make more people know about my designs. Thanks very much, Threadless. I just couldn’t believe it when I received my 1st winning email from Threadless. I was screaming at that time. It feels like flying in the sky, floating in the galaxy, yeah it’s just like a dream.

TM: Out of all of the t-shirts you’ve designed, which one’s your favorite?

FM: My favorite design is “I Got Another Whale”. It is a 2 colors design. The big cat makes this design look fashionable. I personally like the expression of the cat so much.

TM: How do you get inspiration for your t-shirt designs?

FM: Some people will tell a story through a movie, comic book, or a story book. For me, I hope I can tell a story through tee shirt. I believe every single object, human, plant, or animal also got their very own story. I usually will try to create a story for them. This how I get my inspiration for my designs.

TM: Which artists have served as an inspiration and been an influence to you?

FM: Tatsuyuki Tanaka. His works always give me a lot of imagination, and his pencil works are just fantastic!

TM: What are some helpful tips you can give to other t-shirt designers out there?

FM: Keep practicing; the experience needs time to accumulate. You work more, you get more. And try to look for more designs from others artist. This is really helpful. Believe in yourself and don’t give up.
