Don Ed Hardy is an American tattoo artist born in Iowa in 1945, and raised in Southern California from the age of one. Hardy was the first Western tattoo artist to incorporate Japanese tattoo aesthetic and technique into his work and is an accomplished fine artist, as well.
In 2002 Hardy was approached by Ku USA, Inc. to produce a line of clothing based on Hardy’s art. Hardy appreciated the Asian sensibilities of the Ku collection and a license agreement was signed. Within two years, the collection had drawn the interest of large clothing companies. A decision was made by Hardy and Ku USA to form Hardy Life LLC, which holds the trademark ownership as well as the copyrights to all his images.
In 2004 Christian Audigier licensed the rights to produce the Ed Hardy clothing line, which is based on Hardy’s imagery.
Von Dutch is an American multinational clothing company named after motocyclist Kenny Howard.
After Von Dutch’s death his heirs including his sister Virginia sold his name to a fashion designer who started marketing and designing clothing with his trademarked symbol and name.
The Von Dutch company, now owned by Danish Kick Boxing Champion, Tonny Sorensen, and Jaime Aguilar, is now a multinational clothing company widely recognized for getting product placement of their clothing on the rich and famous, famous movie stars and music performers both male and female.
Famous people who endorse the clothing range from Richie Sambora of Bon Jovi, to Jeremy Jackson formerly of Baywatch and Ashton Kutcher to the UK’s Jordan (Katie Price) and Duncan Sheik.
